Surely you just jump on a surfboard out in the waves and everything will be fine?<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">No. It goes much deeper than that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\"><strong>Let&#8217;s start with the equipment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">When you start, it&#8217;s recommended to begin with what&#8217;s called a soft top \u2013 and that&#8217;s for your own sake and everyone else&#8217;s. A softer board does less damage if it bounces back and hits your head or another part of your body, and the same goes if you lose your grip and it flies towards someone nearby. You shouldn&#8217;t surf with a hard top until you feel comfortable out in the waves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Besides soft tops and hard tops, you&#8217;ll hear many different terms when it comes to types of surfboards. The great thing about learning at a surf school or camp is that all of this is usually included when you take lessons, so you don&#8217;t have to figure it all out yourself.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\"><strong>Basic technique<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">As mentioned earlier, this sport is harder than just &#8220;going for it&#8221;. respect for other surfers and the ocean.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-pre-wrap leading-[1.7]\">Here&#8217;s a guide to the most important rules and etiquette that This means that if you and another surfer are going for the same wave, the one closest to the peak (where it breaks) has priority. If you don&#8217;t have priority but take the wave anyway, it&#8217;s called a drop in \u2013 something that can lead to dangerous situations and is never appreciated by other surfers.<\/li>\n<li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Don&#8217;t paddle straight out:<\/strong> When paddling out to the lineup, avoid paddling straight through the area where others are surfing. Instead, paddle around the lineup.<\/li>\n<li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Don&#8217;t lose control of your board:<\/strong> If you fall and there are lots of people around, try to keep track of your board. The same applies when a bigger wave comes \u2013 don&#8217;t let go. Instead, learn the turtle roll or duck dive.<\/li>\n<li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Respect the locals:<\/strong> If you&#8217;re surfing at a new spot, observe how the locals behave and follow their lead.
