Mountain biking all year round in “the Hawaii of the Atlantic”

When we say we’re going on a mountain bike trip to Madeira, many frown and say… Madeira? Isn’t this where pensioners go to do crossword puzzles and look at flowers? Yes, it is, but no nod! Madeira is a real mountain bike gem, where adventures await you all year round. There are tracks for all levels, so don’t be put off. If you like XC/Trail or Enduro/Freeride, you will get the ultimate experience and feel good for a long time afterwards. MTB names like Kris Kyle, Brett Rheeder and Veronique Sandler have left their footprints in the red mud and it’s no accident.

In Madeira you will be transported by shuttle, which is a small bus with a trailer. There will usually be room for 7 people + driver and guide. The tours are determined by the guides based on the conditions, the weather forecast and your technical level. If you are between 5-7 people, you can get a private shuttle and guide, so you can plan your dream trip with us. For smaller groups, expect to commute and ride down the mountain with cyclists from other countries, which in itself is also great for making new friendships. When DBP Adventures was in Madeira, we went mountain biking with riders from France, Canada, Ireland, USA, England and the Netherlands. Madeira is a desirable place to travel to, and mountain bike is 100% on our bucket list!

Madeira also offers long beaches overlooking the green mountains, similar to the Napali Mountains in Hawaii. A dip in the Atlantic Ocean is perfect after a day on the trails. Should you be in a group where not everyone rides mountain bikes, a holiday can easily be combined with other holiday activities including surfing, SUP, hiking and beach holidays.

You will be picked up at the airport and taken directly to your apartment in the town of Caniço. Caniço is located close to the sea with small cozy restaurants right on the doorstep. It is also possible to visit Madeira’s largest city, Funchal. It is easy to get there by bus and a visit to the old town of Funchal is definitely worth a visit. In short, Caniço is perfectly situated with direct access to the mountains, the beach and local restaurants.

There is access to bicycle storage, the possibility of minor repairs and a special rinsing place for the wet days.

Day 1 – Arrival day

You will be picked up at the airport and taken directly to your apartment in the town of Caniço.

Day 2-6 / 5 days of trail surfing

Madeira is divided into Zones and the guides assess which Zone suits best in terms of the weather, level and your wishes.

Zone 1 – Funchal / Santa Cruz.
Zone 2 – Machico.
Zone 3 – Calheta – Prazeres.
Zone 4 – Calheta – Ponta do Pargo.
Zone 5 – Porto Moniz – Fanal.
Zone 6 – São Vicente.

Day 7

The trip is coming to an end, depending on the time of departure a dip in the Atlantic Ocean may be recommended. It is also possible to surf in Madeira, so if you have a late flight and the waves are roaring, then ending with surfing is fantastic.
