The Best Winter and Spring Surf Destinations in Europe

By DBP Adventures

Surfing in Europe is possible year-round, and most people think of summer as the prime time to hit the waves. But planning a surf trip somewhere in Europe during winter or spring has its advantages – not only are flights shorter, but this is also peak season for surfing, meaning better waves and fewer people in the lineup.

If you’re considering a surf getaway during the colder months, this guide is for you! We’ll walk you through some of the best and most popular surf destinations in Europe for winter, key things to keep in mind, and of course, our top tips for making the most of your trip.

Why Surf in Winter?

Surfing in Europe during winter has many perks – let’s go through some of them, along with one of the most common concerns:

Better Waves & Fewer Crowds

Winter is when Atlantic storms are at their strongest and most consistent. While that may sound intimidating at first, in the surf world, it’s actually a great thing – it means it’s peak season! These storms generate waves that are more reliable and generally better than during low season.

Because of these Atlantic swells, countries like Portugal, France, Spain, and even parts of the UK become prime surf spots in winter. Plus, with summer still months away, tourist numbers are lower, which means fewer people in the water.

Cheaper Travel Costs

Since summer is peak season for most European destinations (including those with great surf), you’ll often find cheaper flights in winter. Combine that with fewer crowds, and you’ve got two solid reasons why a winter surf trip is a great idea.

Challenges of a Winter Surf Trip

Of course, every adventure comes with challenges, and winter surfing is no exception. Let’s address the most common concern:

Isn’t It Too Cold?

Yes, surfing in winter is colder than in summer, but temperatures vary depending on the destination. For example, in Baleal, Portugal, winter temperatures rarely drop below 14°C, and there are still 6–7 hours of sunshine per day!

When you join a surf camp, wetsuits designed for the conditions are always provided, ensuring you stay warm even after hours in the water.

If you’re worried about the cold, spring might be a great alternative—it’s still surf season, but the air and water are starting to warm up.

Top Winter Surf Destinations in Europe

Europe has plenty of surf spots that work well in winter and spring. The southern parts of the continent often top the list (no surprise there, considering the climate!).

Portugal

We already mentioned Portugal as a great winter surf destination, and for good reason – it’s one of the best year-round surf spots in Europe!

Ericeira, Baleal, and Santa Cruz are some of the most famous surf towns, known worldwide for their incredible waves. Plus, since Portugal is a small country, it’s easy to get from Lisbon Airport to most coastal towns. And why not spend a day or two in Lisbon before or after your surf trip?

France

France isn’t the first country that comes to mind for surfing, but it actually has an incredible surf scene, with some coastal towns offering a unique and welcoming surf culture.

With shorter flight times from northern Europe, France is also more accessible, and many surfers choose to drive or take the train for an extra fun adventure. We at DBP Adventures organize surf trips to two fantastic spots in France!

Spain

Spain is more than just the Mediterranean – it also boasts some of Europe’s best surf spots if you head north to the Atlantic coast. Winter brings world-class waves to this region, and we’re excited to soon launch a new destination in Northern Spain, where you’ll get epic waves, stunning accommodation, and, of course, incredible food.

And let’s not forget the Canary Islands – a classic getaway for winter sun and warm waters. While many people visit for a beach holiday, the Canary Islands are actually a top-tier surf destination year-round!

Tips for a Successful Surf Trip

  • Choose the Right Spot for Your Skill Level
Different surf breaks suit different experience levels, so it’s important to pick a destination that matches your skills. If you’re unsure, booking a surf camp with experienced instructors can help you progress safely.
  •  Pack the Right Gear
Since winter weather varies across Europe, packing properly is key. A good wetsuit (along with booties and a hood if needed) will keep you warm. If you’re heading to a surf camp, wetsuits are usually provided, and they’ll make sure you have the right one for the conditions.
  •  Immerse Yourself in the Local Culture
A surf trip is about more than just waves – exploring the local culture makes the experience even better. Try local food, wander through charming coastal villages, or even visit a vineyard.

There’s plenty to discover, and we’re always happy to share insider tips from our own travels!
