E-mountain bike in North Macedonia

By DBP Adventures

North Macedonia has some of the most incredible landscapes and historical cities. We have been in the country for the past 10 winters Cat-skiing and now we also arranged E-mountain bike tours around some of the most beautiful areas in the country.

Is North Macedonia a destination for mountain biking? We had to invite a bunch of avid mountain bike enthusiasts to test, and we did so in May 2021.

Fantastic Northern Macedonia

During our mountain bike trip, our enthusiastic “test group” got to experience fantastic areas, beautiful nature and a tasty gastronomy. They drove around the mountains, visited the locals and slept in cozy and charming hotels along the mountains and in the valley.

What is so special about the tracks in North Macedonia is that most of them are not “man-build”. At one point you drive on hiking trails or animal tracks, and it has a charm beyond the ordinary.

The trip to North Macedonia

When you ride an E-mountain bike, you see and experience more, and you can reach much further around the mountains. E-mountain biking still requires a strength from you and it therefore helps to be in reasonable shape before your trip. With the help of E-mountain bike we can ride up to 60 km a day instead of just half. The bikes are specially designed E-mountain bikes and are adapted to your weight and height in advance, so you can hop on the bike as soon as you arrive.

The test trip to North Macedonia fortunately went well, but was a little different than the original plan. The journey began with the weather getting bad and it started with rain, followed by thunder and lightning. On our trips there are always some skilled local mountain guides, who we have carefully selected for these trips. The guides proved to be extremely helpful as the weather became bad. The guides know the areas and the mountains so well that they knew exactly which route they would choose to get the most optimal conditions.

The plan for the trip was initially changed with an overnight stay in the town of Ohrid. The city of Ohrid is one of North Macedonia’s most beautiful cities and since the city is located right on Lake Ohrid, you get a fantastic view with mountains as far as the eye can see. The city has greta Macedonian food, a wonderful atmosphere and not least a very exciting cultural history. The weather began to calm down on the trip, so it was possible to enjoy well-deserved Macedonian lunches in the open, overlooking the snow-capped mountains reflected in the rivers.

The original plan was a round trip where you drive around for 3 days and experience Mavrovo National Park, Galicica National Park, Jablanca and Vodno Mountains, all while our luggage is delivered to the hotel we will stay at. It can change quickly, but it does not affect the experience. The trip was still a BIG success for our test group and they got to experience everything that North Macedonia has to offer.

The areas we visit

Mavrovo National Park offers us to experience small villages, picturesque views of Lake Mavrovo and the old Mavrovo Church. In addition, we cycle through rocks, streams, pine and oak forests. On the trip in Mavrovo National Park we can also expect to see large flocks of sheep. For lunch, rare Macedonian dishes are enjoyed in a quiet location among the mountains.

In Galicia National Park, we start at an altitude of 1100 meters and drive through partly forested rocky roads. On the trip we will drive through the most beautiful landscape where there will be views of Lake Prespa and Lake Ohrid. We will cycle past old authentic village houses and end the day with real Macedonian food and sunset.

The journey on Jablanca Mountain begins with a narrow and steep path that leads us into an old pine forest, where we pass small mountain houses and some giant trees that can make you feel “small”. We drive past small lakes, fields with golden mountains and a spectacular view of Lake Ohrid. Like the other tours, this tour includes an authentic Macedonian gastronomic experience.

Our trip on Vodno Mountain starts in the city of Skopje and offers a not as steep trip as the other trips. Here you can choose between simple paved roads or small demanding paths. From many of the tracks it will be possible to take a cable car from Vodne to the Krstovar peak, where the Krstovar cross was built. One of the largest and highest Christian crosses in the world.
