The Search is a surfing trip for those who are looking for a surfing adventure a little out of the ordinary. We are going to search for the best waves in the winter months where Portugal gets the best and biggest waves of the year, and for surfers, the winter time in Portugal is equal to the peak of the surf season.

Overview

We are going on a intensive surf road trip for intermediate and experienced surfers, where we will find the best waves from Algarve in the south to Peniche in the north, including places like Ericeira (World Surf Reserve), Supertubos, Lagide, Carcavelos, Caparica, Sines and Sagres . We search over a distance of more than 400 km and with a coastline that offers many different and unique surf spots. There will always be a good wave regardless of wave direction and wind, unless the entire Atlantic Ocean is flat, which rarely happens, especially during the winter season.

We chase the best waves together with our Portuguese coaches from Tiago Pires surf school. They know the entire coastline like the back of their hand and know exactly where and when to surf the various spots. They will also help you improve your surfing, i.a. by filming your surf sessions during the week, and doing video analysis.

What level is required to participate? You need to be comfortable surfing on head-high waves and be able to catch head-high waves. We do not expect you to be able to do crazy tuberides, long floaters and cutbacks like John John Florence, but we hope that is what you have come to learn. We will be surfing on both reef and sand spots.

The journey to Portugal

The flight is not included in the price. However, it is easy and cheap to get to Lisbon, where we meet.

Wednesday – Arrival day

You arrive at Lisbon Airport where you will get picked up and driven to Ericeira (only 40 min drive). Here you meet with our guides and instructors to review weather forecasts and plan the next days searching for the best waves.

Thursday – Saturday

The program is not determined in advance and we will search for the best waves from Algave in the south to Peniche in the north. Depending on where we find waves, we have a good handful of hotels and apartments to choose from so that we can stay close to the best waves every night.

Saturday afternoon/evening we arrive again in Ericeira, where we have the last night. It is the perfect city to end a week’s road trip, the city has great local restaurants and cozy cafes and bars.

Sunday – Departure day

We start with breakfast. If time permits, you can take a quick surf session. Then we say goodbye and thank you for a great trip.

There is check-out at 10 and transfer will be arranged with our guide.

I can definitely recommend The Search, Portugal. Before the trip, I was nervous about whether my level was suitable for this tour, but the trip caters to many levels, including those who do not manage to go surfing frequently. The hotel we stayed at was really good and had a good breakfast. The instructors are friendly and have incredible knowledge of where the conditions are best. They took us to some breaks where we were almost the only ones out in the water, which was the first time I had experienced that. The instructors also film and make video analyses of the footage they get, which is incredibly helpful. These are some intense days, with many good hours in the water, so be prepared to go to bed early in the evening. The Search gets 5 stars from me, which is well-deserved.

I went on the DBP Adventures surf trip “The Search” in November 2022. And I only have good memories from there. (It’s been a few days since then, and I really just want to go back!).

On the first day, we started with a briefing and the surf guides (João, Francisco, and Caina) explained how the trip would work. It varies where in Portugal you will be, as the guides plan the trip based on where in the country there are the best waves at that time. For our part, we had a base in Ericeira at a perfectly fine hotel (with a good breakfast) and we left from there every morning.

We were usually picked up at 6:30 am and were on the wave 1-2 hours later. We surfed both north and south of Lisbon. One day we were all the way down at Sines, where we almost had all the waves to ourselves.

We also visited Peniche, which is located to the north. In the evenings, we often had a beer, but it didn’t amount to much more than that, since we were all super tired and went to bed before 10 pm.

All in all, I have to say a big thank you to the guides and organizers. Really nice people all around and I highly recommend this trip.

You don’t have to be super good at surfing to go on the trip – as long as you can paddle out to the lineup on your own, you’re good enough to join. 🏄🏄🏄🏄🏄
