Austria: The Perfect Summer Family Holiday in the Alps

By DBP Adventures

When most people think of the Alps, snowy slopes and skiing are probably the first things that come to mind – but the truth is, the mountains are just as magical, if not more so, in the summer. Think stunning nature combined with fun-filled activities for all ages!

If you’re considering a summer family trip to the Alps, this guide is for you. We’ll share our favorite destinations, the best things to do with kids, and some helpful tips to make the most of your alpine adventure.

The Alps stretch approximately 1,200 kilometers across eight Central European countries, from southeastern France to Slovenia and they make up the largest (and most iconic) mountain range in Europe. So it’s no surprise that most people associate the Alps with winter and skiing. But today, we want to shift focus to something a little different: an adventurous and active summer holiday in the mountains.

Why You Should Visit the Alps in Summer

During the summer months, the Alps transform into a destination that’s just as impressive as in winter – filled with breathtaking landscapes, peaceful surroundings, and exciting adventures for the whole family. Instead of snow-covered slopes, you’ll find lush alpine meadows, rushing streams, and crystal-clear lakes.

Summer in the Alps is also often more affordable than many popular beach destinations or big cities – and with daytime temperatures hovering around a pleasant 20-25°C it’s perfect for outdoor fun without the scorching heat.

Austria: Our Top Summer Pick

Austria has quickly become one of our favorite destinations – no matter the season. But in the summer, the country truly shines with a more laid-back vibe and the perfect mix of nature, culture, and activity. Expect well-maintained hiking trails, a great network of lifts and gondolas, and charming villages where local food takes center stage.

For families with kids, Austria is a hidden gem: safe, clean, and incredibly well-organized. The range of activities is impressive and always designed to challenge and inspire all age groups.

Good to Know About Austria

Card or cash?
In larger cities and tourist areas, paying by card is usually no problem. But in smaller villages, mountain huts, or at certain alpine activities, cash is often preferred. It’s a good idea to carry some euros with you for convenience.

Nearest airport to the Alps
If you’re heading to Saalbach-Hinterglemm or similar alpine villages, Salzburg is the closest airport – about a 1.5-hour drive away. Another good option is Munich, which often offers more flight options and competitive prices.

Combine mountain adventure with city life
Want to extend your trip with a bit of urban exploration? Vienna is a great choice. From Salzburg, it’s just a 2.5-hour train ride to Austria’s charming capital – a safe and family-friendly city packed with culture, sights, and cozy cafés.

Language and hospitality
German is the official language, but English is widely spoken, especially in the tourism industry. Austrians are generally very friendly, helpful, and used to welcoming families with children.

Saalbach-Hinterglemm – A Family Paradise in the Heart of the Alps

Saalbach-Hinterglemm is nestled in the Austrian Alps and is the perfect destination for families looking for an active mountain holiday. Here, a charming alpine village atmosphere blends seamlessly with modern facilities, and nature is always close at hand – made even more accessible thanks to the local activity cards (more on that below).

In addition to the wide range of outdoor adventures, you’ll also find plenty of cafés and restaurants – always appreciated when traveling with kids, especially since Austrian food tends to be a hit with both little and big eaters alike.
